Petroleum refining practices release numerous carcinogenic chemicals in the air, water and land and inflict a plethora of maladies upon those humans and animals exposed to them. Shitty thing is they are now practically everywhere in our environment, and every day that they burn up into the air and leech into the soil and the water, we get sicker.
Some of those chemicals include benzene, toluene, and paraxylene. These have all been linked to major conditions and disorders ranging from cancer to diabetes to neurological syndromes, fetal birth defects, asthma and more.
This map, recently developed by a new environmental health mapping initiative, clearly demonstrates the linkages between industrial activity and health problems. Of course, we don't really need a map, or any pictures, or even a bike ride to know this is happening. It is.
These problems have become a fact of life for many people and will eventually touch us all, as we know now... Everyone truly is downstream. We are all human, and we all have a right to the healthiest world possible, no one more so than our children. This is why we are biking to fight the pipe!
